Visual communication and all aspects of design are an important and prominent part of our daily lives. Drawing is an essential part of many careers from medicine and engineering, to advertising and architecture. In art and design, pupils will learn the skills needed to analyse the work of artists and designers as well as developing the knowledge to become informed consumers.
Through art and design, learners have an opportunity to develop their creative and imaginative skills with the use of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional materials.
In St Margaret Mary’s, BGE pupils will learn about the visual elements of art and design, improving their ability to use a variety of media such as graphite, chalk pastel, oil pastel and watercolour paints. Pupils begin to develop their observational skills, learning how to analyse the work of artists and designers as well as improving their vocabulary. Pupils are also introduced to the design process which allows them to understand the decisions made by designers as well as letting them experiment with a variety of material manipulation techniques.
Throughout their time in the art department, pupils are also exposed to the wide variety of career opportunities in the visual arts and design, as well as developing skills that can be used in all areas of industry such as problem solving, and analytical skills.
