During S1 and S2 they will have practice and experiences in all four areas and their progress will be assessed at various points in the school year.
In S1 and S2 pupils are set according to their progress and ability in the subject. This will allow for more directed and effective teaching and learning.
In S3 and S4 pupils will continue to develop their skills in Language and Communication as they prepare for either Standard Grade or National Qualification Examinations.
In S5 and S6 pupils progress to National Qualification Courses in line with their achievements in their S4 Examinations.
Assessment
S1 and S2: National Assessment ( National Testing in Reading and Writing )
S3 and S4: Standard Grade- Folio, Talk assessment and an External Exam in Reading and Writing.
S5 and S6: Unit Assessments in: Close Reading, Writing, Literary Study and Personal Study and an external exam at Intermediate 1 or Intermediate 2 or Higher.
Library / Resource Centre and Personal Reading:
All pupils have access to the Library throughout their time in the Department. Personal reading is an important part of all courses and is actively encouraged. This is something that parents / carers can become involved in.
Homework:
Homework and Home Study is a requirement within the Department. This will be provided in a variety of ways throughout the year.
Parents and carers play an important role in monitoring and checking that their young people are engaging in homework tasks.
